Soldier go, soldier come, barrack remains static. Many do envy each the NYSC crested vest, especially when Corps Members are on 7/7 dresses. Many will say “I can’t wait to serve this nation because it is our dignity and pride”.
I
am imploring the intending Corps Members to make use of their service year for
good. Be reminded that you are representing your school, family and you
personality. There is no shame and timid in learning what you don’t know. Make
use of NYSC opportunity to learn new things and discover yourself.
Never
let this your service year go for fun. You can have positive impact in people
and always be caution of who you relate with.
Build
your spiritual life incase you are lagging shallow.
Let
me come in with little story about my case during my service year. When I was
in camp, As we all knows that you will meet different people with different
background with different characters, we were all one. As an ex-corps member
that served in a very industrious and business oriented state, I was hoping to
get good job after my service. The journey and otondorialism life started from
camp where the state coordinator said “many of you that are professionally
certified like that of Computer Scientist, Mechanical Engineers, Lawyers,
Medical Doctors, Pharmacists and other professional graduates will be posted to
their area of specialization. I really believed her gullibly. Thank God for
little privileges I got from my school because I could remember that we were
given an opportunity to go for IT when we were in 200 Level. I took the
advantage and did a professional course which helped me to gain ground inside
the camp.
All
programmers, Network administrators, Statisticians and Analysts were called by
the ICT director of Umunya camp (Anambra State) just to screen them and
permanent them.
I
took the step of faith by taken part in the activities. Since then, I didn’t disturb
myself much on camp activities.
Be
reminded that you should not just go inside the camp as otondo, just do your
part and make sure you achieve something. Your little talent may help you
during your service year and you may be posted to a very good place. The step of
faith I took then didn’t fail me because I served in a good company.
8
months down the line I cant say it was the best decision ever. i ended up
teaching one secondary school kid (3)
subjects (Chemistry, Physics and Biology) and the woman was paying (#2000 monthly
for the 3 subjects). I was not surprised because we were in Igbo land and not
everybody valued Education. Most of my colleagues in camp who were smart ended
up getting good jobs in the city just a few months after we started serving.
Most of them just went to PPAs to sign monthly clearances and all. LISTEN. You
can say its wrong and its illegal against the NYSC scheme but what then is
right in this country?
At
least, they have added value to themselves. They have gained some hands on
experience in the field and are much more confident. They had access to
amenities in the cities, and they were open to more opportunities, and yet they
dont have two heads. In the end its gonna be us, all of us looking for jobs,
opportunities in the 'labor' market.
So
to all the prospective corps members, PLEASE if u can help it, Make sure u get
a good PPA for yourselves somehow, and also forget the bullshit 19800. The
money CAN NEVER be enough to spend sef. UNDERSTAND NOW that the only way
service year can be useful is if u add value 100% to yourself in ur career, in
skills acquisition (IMPORTANT), and also psychologically, intellectually and
spiritually.
MY
PIECE OF ADVICE
1. First
understand that it is YOUR service year, and not anybodys business. Dont let
anybody make u to do a silly decision out of pressure. If you have to redeploy
do it at all costs if u can. Dont waste that opportunity to add value.
2. For
those who spend that one year 'of freedom' visiting their partners and living a
reckless life, its not worth it.travelling around wastes money and precious
time. Dont expose your life to everlasting regrets. (pregnancy, abortion, stds,
HIV or strange SOUL-TIES). Make up your mind to live a decent lifestyle, for
the sake of your future. NYSC is just a passing 11 months. At least 60% of
corps members live a reckless sexual life. i saw a lot. ITS not worth it
really. 1 year is just to small to allow your destiny to be tampered with in
the name of sex.
3. for
all its worth, that 3 weeks in camp is just a flying deception. Dont be carried
away by the groove, the fun, the partying. Because in the end, that last day of
camp u will be left on your own. Some of the friends you have made you might
never see them again. Focus on the experience, and enjoy it with your senses
intact. Camp is always fun.. but dont mix with the wrong set of people and give
yourself a bad name. Make friends with only SMART and FOCUSED people
4. Understand
that after the one year, Job search realities start immediately. So dont wait
till then to start looking for a job. Make yourself employable during that one
year. Invest in yourself. Professional certifications are always cheaper for
corps members. Avail yourself of every opportunity and add RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE
to yourself. Dont focus too much on that 19800. INVEST in yourself, with the
money and look at the bigger picture after NYSC. Never have an idle moment.
5. Dont
also be careless with your life spiritually. Many corpers forget they are on a
strange mans land where they are posted to and just live care-free lives. NO.
have a sense of spiritual consciousness always. Belong to a good church, or
whatever course you believe in. NCCF, NACC, MCF alone are not enough, but u can
join them IF you see that the one around you is cool and serious. Cause, all
these bodies too have their own internal issues.. lol (topic for another day).
6. Finally,
JUST commit your ways into Gods hand and trust that the year will be a great
and fulfilling one. Wishing you all the best
